If you have stretch marks on your belly, hips, buttocks, thighs, or breasts, you’re not alone — these indented streaks or colorful lines are among the most common skin flaws. Stretch marks may be permanent, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make them less noticeable. At Laser & Aesthetics Studio of Winter Park in Winter Park, Florida, Dr. Gene Krishingner, Jr. and his expert team use advanced laser technology to reduce the appearance of stretch marks so you can feel more confident in your own skin. Stretch marks are permanent streaks, lines, or indentations on your skin. Although they’re often only slightly lighter or darker than your natural skin tone, they can also appear pink, red, purple, blue, or black in color.
As their name indicates, stretch marks occur when your skin is stretched beyond its normal limits. The severity, color, and overall appearance of any stretch mark depend on where it's located, how long it's been around, and your skin type.
Anyone can develop stretch marks, but women are more likely to get them. While pregnancy is often associated with their occurrence, they can develop after any significant weight gain. The long-term use of corticosteroid medications, which weaken skin elasticity, can also cause stretch marks to appear.
To diminish the appearance of stretch marks and other skin surface abnormalities, Dr. Krishingner and his team use the Palomar Icon™ Aesthetic System by CynoSure®. This is one of the most sophisticated forms of IPL laser technology available.
The fractional, non-ablative laser works by delivering rapid-pulse, precision beams of light deep into the dermis of your skin to stimulate collagen renewal and tighten the underlying layers. This helps restore volume to your skin and improve its overall tone and texture.
The Icon laser also causes miniscule perforations in the tissues that make up your stretch marks, helping to break them down while triggering the production of new tissues.
Over the course of several treatments, this breakdown and renewal process helps diminish the color and texture of stretch marks to leave your skin looking smoother, tighter, and more uniform. The Icon laser is also effective for reducing the appearance of scars and skin lesions.
Before your stretch mark reduction procedure begins, you’ll be given eye shields to protect your retinas and corneas from the laser. Dr. Krishingner may also apply a cryogen spray or a water-based gel to the treatment area to help keep your skin cool as he passes the laser across and around each stretch mark.
Depending on the number, size, and quality of the stretch marks you’d like to treat, your session may last anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour.
Most patients require multiple sessions scheduled over the course of several weeks to get the results they’re looking for. This is because your skin will need to heal following each session, and the collagen renewal process takes time.
